Milk does a body good, right?
Radical turns mainstream

All three concepts were considered radical for years. But now, they're the new conventional wisdom and are embraced in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines.

Willett may not always be right, but he works closely with three of the biggest and longest-running population health studies in the country at Harvard. And he's far from the only authority to raise serious questions about dairy consumption. Among others are New York University nutritionist Marion Nestle and nutritional biochemist T. Colin Campbell at Cornell. Read the entire article.

Caveman Cure-all

Cornell University nutrition researcher T. Colin Campbell asserts that excess animal protein is what turns on the cancer switch.

In 1983 the Chinese government invited him to study why people in certain isolated communities, where diets hadn't changed in centuries, had a stunning lack of cancer and heart disease while city dwellers suffered at a rate similar to that of their Western counterparts.

This year Campbell published his findings [in THE CHINA STUDY], in which he blames large amounts of animal protein, including that from milk, for contributing to the "Western" diseases. This comes from a man raised on a dairy farm. Read the entire article.

From vegparadise.com

If T. Colin Campbell were living 500 years ago, he might have been burned at the stake. He would have been denounced as a heretic who dared challenge the prevailing information. Although this is the 21st Century, there are still individuals and groups who relish the thought of burning him at the stake for his views on proper human nutrition.

In the book The China Project Campbell, Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University, and his son Thomas M. Campbell II present information that is a definite challenge to the dairy and beef industries by revealing how dangerous their products are to human health. The China Study: Linking Nutrition and Disease
Barbara Ferguson, Arab News (Also distributed by the China News Agency)

WASHINGTON — The United States is in the midst of a medical crisis. It has the highest per capita health care cost in any country in the world, but ranks No. 37 in terms of quality of health care. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and more than 15 million Americans have diabetes. Half of all Americans have a health problem that requires taking a prescription drug every week, and more than 100 million Americans have high cholesterol. Read the entire article.

The dairy debate: Does milk build stronger bones?

Some scientists are questioning dairy products' effectiveness in helping prevent osteoporosis.

By Alice Lesch Kelly, Special to The Times

Bones need calcium. Doctors, dietitians and researchers agree on this point.

Conventional wisdom holds that dairy foods are the best source of calcium, and that American adults need to pump up their dairy intake to get the large amount of calcium their bodies need every day. Not everyone, however, believes the conventional wisdom. Read the entire article.

The truth about food
By Simon Tan

A FEW YEARS ago, there was the “French paradox”, a study that examined the fine health and longevity of French countryside peasants and traced it to their regular consumption of wine.

Now, here is the Chinese case, an ambitious 20-year study by Cornell University, Oxford University and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine that is throwing new light on nutrition and diet.

The study is already causing researchers to review and use its findings as ammo against the prevalent low-carbohydrate fad epitomised (sic) by the Atkins Diet and others. Read the entire article.

The China Study

Wow. Wow-wow-wow.

For the past few days, I have been reading a book at a clip that I barely ever use. When I woke up, I wanted to read. In the bathtub, I would read. Before bed, I would try and read some more. I couldn't get enough. Read the entire blog entry.

"Vegan is the Way to Go"

Growing up in a Mexican household allowed me to eat some of the most delicious foods I’ve ever come across. I ate quesadillas of buttery cheeses, beef steaks broiled on the grill, and breakfasts of eggs and protein-rich Mexican sausage.

I now regret eating the way I did. Read the entire column.

Review from the December issue of Library Journal
Irwin Weintraub, Brooklyn Coll. Lib., New York

In the 1980s, a comprehensive study of the effects of diet on disease and lifestyle was conducted among 6500 adults in 65 counties in rural China. Campbell (nutritional biochemistry, Cornell Univ.) examines the results of that study and compares the predominantly plant-based Chinese diets with the high consumption of meat and dairy products in the West. Drawing on hundreds of references and his 40-year career as a nutritional biochemist, Campbell compellingly argues that animal-based foods are responsible for high rates of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and the effects of aging. He challenges long-held beliefs about the nutritional benefits of animal products and points out the confusing glut of contradictory information disseminated by the food industry. Campbell urges readers to eliminate meat and dairy from their diets to achieve better health and longevity. His study will add a new dimension to the public debate about the role of plant-based foods in the human diet. Recommended for nutrition and health collections.

Five-star review from Dr. Antonia Demas, author of Food is Elementary and founder of The Food Studies Institute (from Amazon.com)

The China Study is a must-read breakthrough book for anyone interested in issues concerning scientific integrity and the fields of health and nutrition. Through this brilliantly written and highly readable book, Professor T. Colin Campbell and son Tom tell both a personal and global story that make it clear what the political forces have been to undermine the fields of nutrition and health and confuse the public. This book is so well researched and compelling, it will have a profound influence on the way many people think about truth in science and nutrition, as well as the way they eat. This book will improve health and save lives.

Review: Leonardo Online
By Wilfred Niels Arnold
University of Kansas Medical Center

Any serious challenge to the “American Diet” is bound to elicit some academic, public, and food industry opposition, which will range from mild skepticism through agitated re-evaluation to bitter disdain. What makes this particular contribution exciting is that the authors anticipate resistant and hostile sources, sail on with escalating enthusiasm, and furnish a working hypothesis that is valuable...
